Anaheim Ducks - Hello, Coaching Staff?? You There? It’s Me - A Fan!
Every time I sat down to write this, something else happened with the Ducks. So far, Anaheim lost every game on the first road trip. Bobby Ryan of all people led the league in PIM. (??? Really….Ryan is NOT a fighter.) Those 3 games…wow. I can’t say too much about them as there isn’t much to say. Nothing good anyway, and in this day of Sensitive NHL, I’d better be careful. Not to mention, I don’t think the ref on penaltykill would appreciate an entry from me saying only: Anaheim Ducks Suck on Road Trip.
Luckily, the Ducks won their home opener, which seems to be unusual this season. They lost the next game in a SO and then won last Sunday. So, 5 out of 6 points, I’ll take it. They are starting their second road trip tonight and this fan is keeping the fingers crossed…..and any other superstitious stuff I can come up with before the game.
The Ducks still have a fluctuating D, but it IS one that is taking SOGs. As I commented the other night to a friend: it’s pretty sad when your defense gets the goals. Now, don’t get me wrong! I’ll take defense doing that – shout out to Visnovsky and Lydman!! Until recently, the top line of the Ducks weren’t performing to their collective $15mil+ per season salaries. Thankfully, that’s changed. Whew! My season ticket payments are finally doing some good.
Which leads me to this episode of Why Aren’t the Ducks a Better Team? We have the talent. Take a quick glance at our roster and you’ll see some pretty big names, as well as some great young talent. So, what’s the deal???
It HAS to be the coaching. I saw a listing for the top ten active ex-Ducks and it reads as a ‘who’s who’ (http://ducks.ocregister.com/2010/10/20/the-top-10-active-ex-ducks/47134/) I can add to that list with James Wisniewski, Nick Boynton, (gestures for the two aforementioned notwithstanding) Travis Moen, even *coughRyanWhitneycough*…the players have performed better once they left the Ducks. For the most part, anyway. It’s been said that the ‘system’ the coaching employs is possibly the issue; I think this is partly true. The other part? Loss of respect for the head coach. Granted, he works with what he is given. But, if you are given filet mignon and cook it to the point of puck hardness, you can’t say you’re a competent cook, can you?
We have new D men, our top line seems to be performing and we have the next 3 lines working hard! Hiller is doing his best with what is in front of him, to the point he literally stood on his head Sunday night. (I again have to give props to Troy Bodie and Kyle Chipchura – they’ve REALLY stepped it up since last season.) Cam Fowler is a beast!!
We have it – now we need to look at our coaching staff. And do it NOW, before it gets any worse!!
LET’S GO DUCKS!
