Anaheim Ducks Trades Chris Kunitz

And so it begins…….Anaheim traded Chris Kunitz and prospect Eric Tangradi to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Ryan Whitney. Now, I am sad to see Kunitz go; I really like watching him play. However, the Ducks are in desperate need of defense and seem to think they’ll get it with Whitney. I haven’t done any research on Whitney as of this writing, but I look forward to seeing him on the ice. Now I’m wondering if Scott Niedermayer or Chris Pronger will be put up as well. I’d hate to see them go as well, but this team needs to be shaken up a bit. If the team can’t shake it up themselves (which looks to be the case) then the GM needs to do it for them. With the game tonight against the Bruins, this development will be interesting, to say the least.

  1. The State of the Ducks has been a topic on NHL Home Ice, there’s a lot of discussion about the current condition of the team, the free agency status of many of the players, if and when do you trade Pronger and or Niedermayer, their cap issues, do you make trades for a run this year or throw it in and trade for value down the road, etc. If you ask me, seems like Brain Burke knew these decisions were coming and he left just in time to avoid having to make them!

  2. Wow, this is news to me. However, it was to be expected. Whitney has been extremely inconsistent since coming back from his foot surgery. He does have a lot of potential, but right now the Penguins are pretty deep in their defenseman and could afford to trade a defenseman or two.

  3. Sharksfan, its funny you should mention Burke! I just said to my boss this morning (amateur hockey player and Ducks fan) how I missed Burke and wanted him back!! We were discussing the points you brought up and, as a long time fan, I would think trading for the future would be best. We have Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan (for example) that the team can be built around. However, then you have the ones who have been there when they won the Cup (Kunitz included) and you can’t downplay the need for the veterans. The way the team has been playing (and I’ll get smacked for this) looking only for the playoffs would be, well, stupid.
