Believe It or Not, The San Jose Sharks Toughest Opponent Is The Florida Panthers

sharksfan Tomorrow night’s San Jose Sharks game against the Florida Panthers is, believe it or not, the Sharks toughest opponent to date. Of all the opponents faced so far only one team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, had a win when playing the Sharks. Here are all the records of the teams at the time they played the Sharks:

Anaheim Ducks 0-0-0
Los Angeles Kings 0-0-0
Los Angeles Kings 0-1-0
Columbus Blue Jackets 1-1-0
Anaheim Ducks 0-4-0
Philadelphia Flyers 0-3-1
Philadelphia Flyers 0-3-2

Even more interesting is that the only teams with a win so far (and the two games coming up) are teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year. After the Panthers (3-3-0) it’s on to the Tampa Bay Lightning (1-2-3), but beyond that they have two games against the Pittsburgh Penguins (4-2-1) and the Detroit Red Wings (4-1-1). One could argue that the Sharks have had the luxury of a few extra weeks of tune up games before it gets serious against last year’s Stanley Cup Finals participants. If anyone is looking to assess all the Sharks’ off season moves - upgrading the blue line and implementing Todd McLellan’s oh-fence, this is the perfect test at the perfect time. If they come up short they’ll have plenty of time to work out the issues. If they stand up to the task they’ll have added validation that their rebuild was on the right track.

I need to clear my calendar for next week….
