Check Please…The San Jose Sharks Leaving Early

San Jose SharksSharks fans, I think we’re done. A while back I wrote that, even if we don’t go deep in the playoffs, all I wanted to see from the San Jose Sharks was the kind of effort where you know they left nothing on the ice. Well, we didn’t get much of anything this playoff ‘run’. Not only are the Sharks about to get eliminated sometime within the next few days but we’ve seen performances worse than anything seen all season. The Sharks literally gave the game to the Anaheim Ducks last night. They passed the puck to the Ducks, stood around waiting for the Ducks to come get the puck and moved about as fast as you would expect if they had one broken skate.

At one point during last night’s *game* (if you can call it that) I turned to my friend Tom and asked “what more do we need?!?!” Doug Wilson went out and got everything we thought we needed – a coach whose style matched the personnel, players with Stanley Cup experience, blue line threats – but it appears those additions weren’t enough. Apparently the problem isn’t coaching or personnel, it is once again some kind of systemic inability to understand it’s THE PLAYOFFS! We actually took a step backwards this season, we’re not even going to make the second round…

The guys on NHL Live are discussing the Detroit Red Wings/Anaheim Ducks matchup and how that gives the Vancouver Canucks the advantage…

My *hope* is that Evgeni Nabokov is injured, otherwise I think we have to face that fact that he has not played as well as a championship team needs, and I’m talking about his play all season. Could we see an off-season move, maybe not the replace him right away but prepare for the eventual change (can you say ‘goalie controversy’?)

Dan Boyle is under contract until 2014, maybe we should make him captain…..

Sorry, I’m venting – I love the Sharks.

Thinking ahead, the Sharks maxed out their payroll this season and, as are all the other teams, they’re staring at either a stagnant or possibly lower salary cap due to economic conditions. Mike Grier, Jeremy Roenick, Travis Moen, Claude Lemieux, Rob Blake, Alexi Seminov, Kent Huskins and Brian Bucher are unrestricted free agents next near and Ryane Clowe, Marcel Goc and Torrey Mitchell are restricted free agent. Doug Wilson has been pretty good at building a team, will he be as good at managing a team at the cap?

I’ve said it all along, for as disappointed as I am about how this season is ending, I appreciate being a fan of a winning Bay Area sports team. I hope the Sharks’ ownership and management continues to focus on producing a winning product. The season was very exciting and I was fortunate to see a lot of wins in person at The Tank. We’ve used a lot of clichés this year, but I think it’s time to use that last, final, saddest one of all – ‘there’s always next year.’

  1. That was a tough loss. I was disappointed to see the score when I woke up in the morning (those 10:30pm games for the East coast really suck). Anyhow, this offseason will be a test for the Sharks just like the Pens offseason last year. The salary cap is just not going to allow a whole lot, especially with it most likely going down in a year. I don’t think it will be affected for this next year though.

I myself am a little worried about the Pens not wrapping up their series last night. They are starting to play worse and the Flyers are starting to play better. *holds breath*

  2. Put a fork in them, cause they are done. I don’t know why we are such a good regular season team and such a poor play-off team. I can see now why Boston got rid of Jumbo Joe, what a non-factor. I agree with you Shark Fan, maybe we need to make a change with the Captain. Man this sucks.

    GO PENS!

  3. I don’t think Joe (or anyone else for that matter) has to go necessarily, but maybe the Cup winners we got are just that, Cup winners. We need that Cup winning, ‘in your face’ leader, someone who’s not only going to call out the other players but can back it up with his (or ‘her’, in the case of the Sharks), play. Lemeiux WAS that kind of player, but his addition might be a few days late and a few dollars short. Go Pens!

  4. Thanks guys for supporting the Pens on their run. I know that it is extremely disappointing to have your post season go like that considering such a wonderful regular season run. The playoffs are just an entirely different season. It simply amazes me. I am still holding out for the Sharks to at least take it to a game 6 but it certainly won’t be easy.

Again, I appreciate the support for the Pens! Go Sharks!

  6. But just in case - the Stockon Thunder have advanced to Round 2 in their quest for the ECHL’s Kelly Cup.

  7. I am disappointed in all of the players during this playoff series. None of them have stepped up and taken control. After the game 5 win, Marleau seems to be doing that a little, but it is not enough. But the one I am most disappointed in is Nabakov. Last year against Calgary he told the team to start acting like men, or something like that. It seems to me that this year someone needs to tell him that. Sure he has made some great saves, but he has let more bad ones in than he has stopped good ones. I know he is not getting much help from the defense, but when the Ducks are getting less than 20 shots per game (Games one and two) and he’s allowing two, three, four goals then there is a problem. Sure, he has faced more shots since, but on Thursday he was terrible. I have hope that the whole team can “man-up” and get past Anaheim. Waiting with baited breath and a pounding heart for Monday’s game.

  8. Nabby’s comments came after the third loss to Dallas in Round 2, and he said everyone had to play better including himself, and after that I remember Nabby DID play better. I enjoyed the win, but I’m not convinced we’re seeing Sharks Playoff Hockey yet, just good hockey. We might be getting there…

  9. it is too late for “we might be getting there”; we have to be there. This is the playoffs, and the sooner the Sharks realize that, the better. Of course, it would have been ideal if they could have realized it when the series started, not when they were down 3-1.
