Pittsburgh Penguins

Dreams Of Armstrong?

It is definitely way to early to start looking towards the offseason, but I can’t help but take a quick peak at it. There has been some talk over the past 6 - 8 months concerning the future of Atlanta Thrasher’s winger Colby Armstrong. Armstrong who was traded to the Thrashers by the Penguins at the trade deadline last year is set to be a Restricted Free Agent after this season. Much of the talk has been centered around the possiblity of Armstrong returning to Pittsburgh to re-unite with best friend Sidney Crosby. As a Penguins fan this is definitely something that I would be extremely interested in happening, however is it possible?

First, as mentioned above, Armstrong is a RFA, which means Atlanta will get a chance to match any offer given to him. The Penguins already have a large amount of their cap taken up by Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Marc Andre-Fleury, Ryan Whitney, and Jordan Staal. Do they have the room to afford Armstrong? Would Colby even be willing to come back to the team that ditched him last year in exchange (with a few other players/picks) for Marian Hossa? The thought of having Armstrong back definitely excites me, however after looking at all of the facts it seems like it could be a slim chance of happening.

Colby Armstrong could bring some much needed grit back to the Penguins. He is a great role player and the Penguins are in definite need of this.

The Penguins do have an abundance of defenseman available to them that they could use for possible trades, however none of these defenseman (with the exception of Brooks Orpik and Ryan Whitney) would bring a whole lot in exchange for them.

Colby Armstrong heading back to the Penguins? Who knows, but it is certainly an idea that I hope the Penguins at least entertain for a minute or two.

With all that said, it’s time for me to take a look back at the current season where the Penguins are continuing to struggle to generate any type of consistancy…
