Five Questions Answered Regarding The Vancouver Canucks

We asked theoldtimer for his opinion on the Vancouver Canucks and the NHL in general.

Q: Sharks fans have the luxury of knowing early in this season that their backup goalie, Brian Boucher is a capable goalie should Evgeni Nabokov go down again. How are Canucks fans feeling about losing Roberto Luongo?

A: Curtis Sanford is a very capable backup to Luongo, and with Cory Schneider backing him up we’re okay, but Luongo is also the team’s captain and leader. When he’s on the ice everyone feels more confident, so losing him means the whole team is down a notch. When you’re down a notch in the NHL, you’re in trouble.

Q: What has been the greatest surprise the season regarding the Canucks?

A: For me the greatest surprise has been the play of the 3rd line of Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows, and Jannik Hansen. The checking line has become one of the best in the NHL and they are also contributing on offence. A close second would be the play of Kyle wellwood who has 9 goals in 19 games on only 26 shots

Q: Excluding Luongo, what has been the biggest disappointment?

A: I’m assuming you mean the disappointment realting to Luongo’s injury. There are really no major disappointments to date, but not being able to sign Mats Sundin or someone of his caliber may hurt the team in the long run.

Q: Outside your hockey club, in your opinion what’s been the biggest surprise in the NHL?

A: Everyone knew that the Sharks would be contenders, but the dominant play that they have demonstrated has got to be the second biggest surprise after the play of the Canucks in the first quarter of the season.

Q: What’s been the biggest disappointment?

A: The fact that three out of Canada’s six teams, Toronto, Ottawa, and Edmonton are currently out of playoff contention.
