Hockey Night In San Jose

sharksfan BACKGROUND: The Old Timer, who currently resides in Canada and is our contributing Vancouver Canucks writer, is the father of Paul, a good friend of The .Net.

I thought I would let you know that the Oiler game against the Sharks tonight will be part of Hockey Night in Canada’s triple header and will be seen coast to coast in living colour and HD.

Sharksfan note: They have hockey triple headers in Canada?!?!

Also, congratulations to the Sharks and their fans for tying the record for the best start after 25 games which had been held by the 1943-44 Montreal Canadiens. You may or may not know that Paul’s 3rd cousin, Leo Lamoureux, played defense for that team, which also went on to win the Stanley Cup that season.

Leo’s mother was a dear aunt of mine who, when I was a kid, lived a few blocks from us in Windsor Ontario . She had a blind daughter that lived with her, and who ran a cigar stand in the lobby of our local police station. It also was only a few blocks from where I grew up, but that is another story. There was never a Saturday night that the radio at her home was not tuned to Hockey Night in Canada, and, because there were only six teams at the time, the Canadiens were often playing the Maple Leafs or the Red Wings. On occasion when the Canadiens were in Detroit for a Sunday night game, Leo would come to Windsor to visit his mother and we would all try to get a chance to see him. Of course in those days, the players made so little money they had nothing to give to kids in the way of souvenirs. Unfortunately for Leo, he died at the young age of 44. My older brother Don was at his funeral and I remember him talking about how the pall bearers included the Rocket.

In commenting on the Sharks accomplishment, a local sports columnist said that he would ”.. bet on the Sharks in a battle between the two record holders. Of course, members of that Habs team are in their late 80s and most would now skate as slowly as Joe Thornton.”

Enjoy the limelight while you can, the Canucks are coming.

Regards
The OT

I have a friend who’s distant relative was carried to his grave by The Rocket - AWESOME!
