How Good Is Mike Green?‏

If you take a look at Mike Green points per game and goals per game and project them over an 82 game season. And the numbers are astronomical for a defenseman. 41 goals? 93 points? Those are Paul Coffey numbers. If Green breaks 30 goals, and it looks like he will with 22 currently and 25 games left, it will be the first time a defenseman has broken 30 since Kevin Hatcher did in 92-93. Along with Hatcher and Coffey, in the 30-goal club he’ll join Dennis Potvin, Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, and Doug Wilson. Not a bad group of names to be associated with.

Of course for Green to actually be “worthy” of being grouped with those names he’ll have to keep the red-light on.

I’m skeptical if Green actually deserves the Norris Trophy this year, because while his defensive game is pretty good and improving, I’m not convinced that it’s deserving of the Norris.

To another year of Ovechkin and Green leading in goals.
