No Defense But San Jose Sharks Still Beat Philadelphia Flyers - Again

sharksfan I didn’t get to see last night’s game but I did catch the game replay on NHL Home Ice. I know Doug Wilson always envisioned a fast paced, uptempo Sharks oh-fence but geez…at what cost to the defense?! Let’s review:

2 Games
2 Overtime Periods
1 Shoot Out
22 Goals
2 Short Handed Goals (Jeff Carter (PHI) 1 short handed goal in each game)

Scariest statistic of all: Evgeni Nabokov 10-46 5 GAA .782 SA%

I must admit over the years I’ve gotten used to the Sharks stingy defense so numbers like this scare me, however when I was listening to XM last night they mentioned how the Detroit Red Wings managed to get by the St. Louis Blues (winning the game 4-3). Even though the game was close the announcers pointed out that championship teams win the close ones. I’m applying that theory to the Sharks’ last two performances….

  1. Yeah, it is a little scary. And it could be that Nabakov is going through one of his unreliable phases. Usually he is spot on, but every once in a while he gets into these grooves where he cannot step up and stop the puck, no matter what the defense does. Of course it helps if the defense actually shows up and puts some pressure on the opposing team.

  2. ian - they say change is painful so hopefully these are the natural growing pains from changing systems. Luckily it’s early - if by mid-season we don’t see any improvement then we need to start worrying.

  3. Where is the defense/ just saw the Panthers score and its 3-1 FLORIDA at the end of the 1st. WTF? Put Boucher in and give Nabby a break. Oh yeah, and Sharks, play some DEFENSE

  5. now its 3-3 thanks to Marleau. I know you’re probably watching the game, but I feel it’s important to chime in. And 15 seconds later, the Sharks let one go and its 4-3 Florida. Nabby’s faced 24 shots; way too many in for the 2nd period. Where’s the defense, the smart play, and the penalty kill. Short handed goals are great, but they mean nothing if you can’t stop the other team from scoring

  6. i guess they didn’t allow a pp goal (as of yet) but they’re still playing sloppy as hell

  7. So I guess being out of the country this is the first game you’ve actually seen. You’re seeing what I’ve been seeing, a really open offense but complete lack of defense. Luckily we have all season to figure this out…the real test is next week!
