Phoenix Coyotes: Stanley Cup Champion Who??

Phoenix CoyotesThe Phoenix Coyotes stormed the Igloo Wednesday night to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and for their trouble walked away with a 3-0 win. Yes, you heard right..The Phoenix Coyotes beat the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins in Mellon Arena nonetheless!

In their drive to be taken seriously the Coyotes, coming off a 6-3 win against LA, dug deep and showed tremendous focus. The penalty plagued Penguins gave up two goals on power plays, the first to Ed “Jovo” Jovonovski and the second to Petr Prucha. The final nail in the coffin occurred when Brent Johnson was pulled late in the 3rd period and Radim Vrbata tapped one into the empty net.

Ilya Bryzgalov was brilliant again in goal blocking all of the 25 shots for the shutout. The only disappointment of the night was Shane Doan’s fantastic shot that was blocked by Johnson.

For the record I got a lot of grief over this game today. Everyone kept saying “The Penguins huh? Good luck!” I remained quietly confident and the boys did not disappoint. Thursday night we meet the Sabres in Buffalo and this may seem greedy, but I say this to the Coyotes..”please sirs..may I have another?”

Let’s Puck!

  1. There’s been conversation that all the controversy over the bankruptcy of the team may have garnered some positive attention for the ‘Yotes’, that people out there are pulling for them given everything those players had to go through this summer. They may be the ‘Cinderella’ team everyone quietly hopes does well.

  2. Congratulations to the ‘Yotes they deserved that win. They played a complete game and maintained discipline. The same cannot be said for the Pens. They showed no heart, appeared to be uninspired, and overall looked like they just didn’t care.

The Pens are going to have to learn that they will have targets on their backs for the entire season because they are reigning Stanley Cup Champions.

It is still early and I look forward to seeing how the Coyotes for the long haul of the regular season.

  3. Thank you Pittpen and Sharksfan for your gracious comments to my not-so-gracious gloating! It is most definitely early, however I am pleased the guys are coming out of the gate so hard. As with any championship team the pressure is there for your Penguins to perform and somehow I have no doubt that they will play the season well.

  4. So this season the Blues beat the Wings the Sharks were beaten by the Kings and the Yotes beat the Pens. That doesn’t happen very often.
