Pittsburgh Penguins: 2nd Round Mid-Series Update

Pittsburgh PenguinsThe Penguins are down 2 - 1 in their Conference Semi-Finals series against the Washington Capitals. This series has had a similiar twist to their first series against the Philadelphia Flyers with the exception that the situation is reversed. The Penguins have been out playing and out shooting the Capitals in every game so far and yet the Capitals still started off with a 2-0 start. In the Pens previous series, Philadelphia had been the one out shooting and out playing the Penguins, but the Pens still ended up winning the series in 6 games.

Tonight, the Pens will host the Capitals for Game 4. 24 hours later game 5 will be played in Washington. This is going to be an interesting test for both of these teams as it isn’t often in which playoff games are played back-to-back. In my opinion, the Penguins MUST win this game tonight. I believe that game 4 is just as important as getting that first win in the game 3. If the Pens can win, then they will have tied up the series and brought momentum to the Pens as they head back to Washington.

I am curious on how Varlamov will withstand the exhaustion factor. He is still young and inexperienced (even though hasn’t shown that so far) but one of the biggest digs on this kid was his conditioning. I am curious to see how he will handle the back-to-back games and with the amount of shots being sent his way by the Pens, he has to be getting tired. Regardless, he has impressed me so far with his performance. I just hope the Pens can get by him.

Evgeni Malkin finally made his presence known with a goal in game 3. He had been getting a lot of grief from fans and analysts alike because he had a “disappearing act” similar to last years Stanely Cup Finals. However, he has been playing well for all three games just not putting any shots in the net. I will be interested to see if he can carry the momentum from game 3 into tonight’s game. It was nice to see other players scoring some goals (Fedotenko, Letang, and Malkin) rather than just Sidney Crosby.

It’s time to see what the Pens are made of…

Let’s go Pens!

  1. Update - Gonchar got injured in the 1st period. I am hoping it’s nothing major as this would be a massive blow to the Pens defense and power-play unit.

  3. Hmm, you have to wonder what the league will do with the hit from Ovechkin on Gonchar. I doubt much will come from it because it’s Ovie (on the other hand I am sure other people would be saying the same thing if it was Crosby).

    Check out the clip yourself…

I just hope it isn’t serious. Goodluck Sergi Gonchar!

Let’s go Pens! Take game 5 in Washington to make it 3 - 2 Pens!

  4. The prognosticators on NHL Home Ice were saying that the back-to-back favors the Pens - if they win on Fri (which they did) then they can immediately carry that momentum into Game 5.

  5. sharksfan -

It looks like they did just that. Quite a game. I was impressed with how Washington came out and played. Most of all, I liked how the Pens responded. This series is not over, but I am hoping that the Pens can wrap this series up at home.

    Let’s go Pens!

  6. What a game…what a series! As much as I didn’t want this to happen, there will be a decisive game 7 Wednesday in Washington to decide who will be headed to the Conference Finals.

    Let’s Go Pens!

  7. Wow, you seem pretty calm Pittpen for a game 7. After game 6, I would have destroyed a home-made sign I created, shaved-off my playoff beard and…….. Oh wait, I already did that.

    Good Luck tonight.

  8. FC Sharks Fan,

Haha, I understand your frustration. I was only able to make that post after I had calmed down. I was extremely upset that Pittsburgh did not take that game especially after the many opportunities that they had. I truly feel that if Pittsburgh plays the best they can they should send Washington packing. Regardless, we will have to wait and see what happens.

    Go Pens!
