Pittsburgh Penguins: Conference Semi-Finals Preview

Pittsburgh PenguinsOne series down, three more to go…hopefully. The Penguins will open up the other Eastern Conference Semi-finals series against the Washington Capitals tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm EST. Unlike the last series and all of last year’s playoff series (with the except of the Stanley Cup Final series) the Penguins will start off on the road in another very hostile environment.

If I did not know any better, I would think that the Pens-Caps series was the Stanley Cup Finals. It seems like most of the media is now focused on the Ovechkin vs Crosby, or Ovechkin vs Malkin, or Crosby vs Semin, or Fleury vs Varlamov. The hype is there and as it should be. This series has a potential of being one of the greatest. On the other hand, it’s also the playoffs and anything could happen.

For the Penguins to win this series they are going to have to play with the same style and urgency they did (for the most part) against the Philadelphia Flyers. Ovechkin is just one piece of the puzzle. The Pens are going to have to stop not only him but the rest of the team as well. So far, Ovechkin has been pretty quiet points wise in the playoffs. That isn’t something the Pens should over look.

The Pens are going to need a heavy dose of defense to clog the neutral zone. They are going to have to slow down the Capitals potent offense. On the other side, they are going to have to get more shots on goal. Varlamov is still young and inexperienced and the Pens need to take advantage of that. Of course, they can always pull Varlamov and get Theodore out there.

What am I looking for from the Pens? … Another great series from Marc-Andre Fleury and players not named “Crosby” or “Malkin” to step up and score. If the third and fourth lines of the Pens step up and put some heat on the Capitals this would be a huge plus for the Pens.

In the end, it’s time for another series of hockey. I am extremely nervous and excited at the same time.

Let’s go Pens!!

  1. So, is there anyone else on the Pens’ team other than Sidney Crosby? I know that there is a lot more to this game than just scoring goals, but it seems like the effort just has not been there for the other players. With the exception of a lucky goal that Varlamov let through by Mark Eaton, Sidney Crosby has scored all four of the Penguins goals this series.

Malkin has been nonexistent and the Pens have made stupid mistakes which have cost them goals. My hope is that the Penguins can tie the series up at home, but that might be a little too hopeful. The good news is that the Penguins have been in each game and have been close to winning. They just have to remain positive, improve on the power play, and get other players involved!

    Go Pens!

  2. Great game Pittpen. Totally a game of inches. Varlamov is playing great and believe me, we know about hot goalies. Is he lucky? Yes, but sometimes it’s good to be lucky. I thought the refs were going to give it to the Caps. Interference by Dupuis? Really? Whatever. Way to pull it out.

Off the subject, but you got to love the music in between face-offs at the Igloo.

    Go Pens!

  3. FC Sharks Fan,

That was an amazing game. I was so excited when Malkin put in that wrist shot to break the 1-1 tie. That is until the Caps got that power play. Varlamov is playing outstanding. He has not buckled under the pressure and has certainly impressed me. I would like to see him have a couple of bad games in this series though.

Yes, the Igloo’s music selection tonight was awesome. I certainly enjoyed that too. I am just hoping for more good games like this (of course with the Pens on top!)

  4. Hey Pittpen,

Did you hear about the Penguins fan making death threats against Ovechkin? Hmmm…… Where were you in the night of…?

    Good luck tonight.

  5. Ha ha, yeah I heard about those threats. Just a stupid teenager thinking that the internet is free for him to make him self sound like a bad ass. Oh, and of course I had nothing to do with it..did I mention that I got my laptop taken away..err I mean I lost it.

Thanks for the good luck. They are going to have to play another outstanding game to get this series tied.

    Go Pens!
