Pittsburgh Penguins: Little Time Left

Pittsburgh PenguinsAfter tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals, the Penguins will have 8 games left in the regular season. They currently sit 4th in the Eastern Conference after just being pushed out of the 2nd seed with New Jersey’s win last night. How important is it for Pittsburgh to get the 2nd seed? In the big picture, not much. However, it would save them from having to meet Washington until the Eastern Conference finals if both teams make it that far.

The problem for the Penguins are that they have struggled against two teams this year, the Devils and the Capitals. They were swept by the Devils this year as they lost all six games against them. Before tonight’s game they are currently 0-1-1 against the Capitals. Evgeni Malkin will be out of the line up for the 3rd time in 4 games with a foot injury that he sustained in a game against the Lightning where a Kris Letang shot hit his foot. The good news is that he gets to heal up before the playoffs, but the Penguins definitely appear to miss him right now.

Both trade deadline players Jordan Leopold and Alexei Ponikarovsky have not really provided what they were brought in for and that was to provide more of a scoring touch. I certainly would not call the deals a bust though as both players have definitely stepped up and contributed good play.

The Penguins really need to win most of the 8 remaining games if they want to have a shot at keeping up with New Jersey and the 2nd seed. Otherwise, it appears that the most likely result will have them remain in the 4th spot in the Eastern Conference. All eyes will be on how the positions 5 - 8 round out to see what the match ups will be.

My feelings thus far consist of a little uncertainty. I feel like Pittsburgh has the talent to make another deep playoff run but their consistency is a little troubling right now. Of course, this is the regular season and some players might be resting a little more knowing that the real season starts soon. I am just hoping some consistency can be found and some momentum can be brought in with the Penguins for the post season.

Let’s Go Pens!

  1. i think laich will be a bigger miss for us than malkin for you. i still think the caps will win, but it should be as close as ever. theo has to have a good night but he’s in great form. the media always hype up the ovi-sid battle, and this year it has been important, but i think the goalie battle is the biggest one this time.

  2. I agree. I am sensing a Caps win tonight, but with the way the Pens have been playing without Malkin I sense that it might be the other way around where Malkin will be missed more than Laich. I do find it funny how both players were injured by their own players.

  3. malkin is a bigger part of your team than laich is of ours, and we have more depth now so we can replace him, although he will certainly be missed on the pp, so you may be right. although i guess malkin will be a big miss on the pp too

  4. Yeah, I guess we should be thankful there are not more injuries on both of these teams this late in the season. Here is to hoping both get healthy quick. I have heard that Malkin could be out a couple of weeks.

  5. yeah just read a blog entry on caps insider on interviews with the pens and malkin’s injury and bylsma said they don’t know when he’ll be back. laich’s only gonna be out 2 games the thinking is. it ends a run of something like 275 straight games for him.

  6. That’s a hell of a run that ends. At least Malkin’s injury is now and now in the playoffs. I’m ready for the game and hope it will be a good one!
