Pittsburgh Penguins: Only 4 More Wins Needed

Pittsburgh PenguinsThe Pittsburgh Penguins have returned to the Stanley Cup Finals and will have a rematch of last year’s Finals against the Detroit Red Wings. For the Red Wings, many believed they would have no problem making it back to the Cup, but not so much can be said about the Penguins. Many people had counted this team out midway through the year as they were sitting in 10th place in the Eastern Conference. The Pens have shown pure determination to get back to where they are. They are looking for redemption and have another shot.

This Penguins team is obviously much different than last years. Many would say this team is actually less talented than last years. This Pens team went through a more difficult offseason and regular season for that matter. What has changed between this year and last? One word: Health. With the exception of Sergi Gonchar who is still working on getting back to 100%, the Pens do not have any major injuries. The Red Wings are not as lucky. No, they don’t have major injuries, but they are certainly looking a little beat up after the Semi-Conference Finals against Anaheim went 7 games.

This series will be a test of determination for the Pens. Let’s face it, the Detroit Red Wings are one of the best, if not the best, franchise in the NHL. This team is a dangerous one with a hell of a lot talent on it. Players look to take pay cuts just to stay on this team. For the Penguins to have a chance at this series they are going to have to play harder than they had all season and post-season.

I do feel like the Penguins got the better end of the deal after Detroit took care of Chicago in 5 games. This pushed up the Stanley Cup Finals from starting June 5th to May 30th. The Red Wings team is beat up and needed the rest. I also believe that the back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday benefit the Penguins more than Detroit.

To be the best you must beat the best. The Penguins are going to have to play outstanding and this starts and ends with Marc-Andre Fleury. If he can play solid and the rest of the team does what they do best than this will be a better series than last year. Also, this Penguins team, under Dan Bylsma, is playing the style of hockey similiar to the Red Wings. If they can continue this than the Cup might be theres.

Regardless, there are only a maximum of 7 NHL games left of this season. It has been a great season and regardless of the outcome, I am one extremely proud Pittsburgh Penguins fan.

Let’s Go Pens!!

  1. 0-2…not the way I had hoped the Pens would have started the Finals. Tonight is Game 3 and let’s face it, it is practically a game 4 for them. In my opinion, the Pens MUST win the next two games at home to have a chance at winning this series. Every player has to step up to another level and take it to Detroit. This has been a much more even series than it looks right now and it’s time for the Pens to shine.

This is what a Stanley Cup series is suppose to look like. The Pens are playing with heart and determination (lacking from San Jose). I’m still trying to get over the early exit and can’t get over the feeling we should still be playing. But man are the Wings playing well also. They play fast for an older team. I can still admire them and hate them at the same time. But the Pens are matching them shift for shift. I don’t know how we would have faired if we made it this far. Best of three now. Good luck.

I still have to give kudos to the music at the Igloo. I like Journey as much as the next person, but I’ll give anything not to hear “Don’t Stop Believing”, simply for the one line:

Just a city boy, born and raised in (music stops and fans sing), South Detroit.

    GO PENS!

  4. FC Sharks Fan,

I could not agree with you any more about the music selection at the Igloo. They certainly make awesome selections.

This has been a great series so far and it is nice to know that this series will go at least 6 games. The Red Wings are simply put the team to beat. I don’t care how old Lidstrom is he is still one hell of a defenseman. Pittsburgh still has a lot to do to even be compared to an organization like Detroit.

I look at Game 5 being just as important as Game 4. If Pittsburgh is going to steal one in Detroit, this is the time for them to do it.

Go Pens! Go back to Pittsburgh with a chance to win the Cup!

  5. Game 5 was a flat out embarrassment. I know the Pens can play better than that. Let’s just hope that this kick in the ass by the Red Wings awakens this team. This game was ridiculous and the blame should be placed on the entire team and not just Fleury.

However, the series isn’t over yet…

  7. All I know is that I was about to have a heart attack in the last 2 minutes of Game 6.

    Let’s Go Pens!
