Playing The Blame Game in Vancouver

The Canucks have lost their last four games - all at home. Mats Sundin has arrived and has been sitting in the penalty box for three of the opposition game winning goals in the five games he’s played. Roberto Luongo returned from injury and allowed four goals in a 4-1 loss to the Coyotes. In that same game, Kyle Wellwood, arguably the team’s best face-off man and a top goal scorer, was a healthy scratch. The Boo Birds have come out at General Motors Place and calls have been heard for Coach Alain Vigneault’s head.

The only thing I can think of is that the Canucks, collectively, had too much turkey over the Christmas season and the have been playing like turkeys ever since. They have yet to win a game at home in 2009 and the formula for making the playoffs has been thrown out of whack. The General Manager, Mike Gillis, has come out in support of Vigneault and the beat writers are saying that it’s too early to panic. The owners have been quiet, but if things don’t turn around soon, they will be heard from. In particular, if the sold out streak at GM Place comes to an end. In my experience, the bottom line drives just about everything in life.

My view is that the Canucks will recover and make the playoffs. They have too many good players and too much pride not to suck it up and get back on track. If I’m wrong, it’s not going to be pretty in this town.
