San Jose Sharks And Detroit Red Wings Succesfully Defend Home Ice

sharksfanAfter the Detroit Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks at Joe Louis Arena last night - the last of the 4 regular season games between the top two teams in the Western Conference - here’s what we can casually deduce for the regular season series:

1) Both teams can succesfully defend home ice
2) The Red Wings are better at defending their ice than the Sharks

The last time the Red Wings came to San Jose, they responded as one would expect from the defending Stanley Cup Champions. They never seemed to get rattled, they stuck with their game, they scored goals when they needed but in the end, the Sharks prevailed. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the same cannot be said of their road efforts. Despite what the Red Wings were throwing at them the Sharks stuck with their game plan and pressed on, although it was at best a somewhat out-of-sync effort (click here to read, in the comments, FC Sharks Fan’s assessment of the game). The best thing I can say about the Sharks’ effort was that I don’t feel they ever quit which, in years past, was a recurring team character defect.

So now the question - do you or do you not want to face the Red Wings if and when we make the playoffs?

  1. It would be a great series, and it would be nice to say that we beat Detroit, but given the choice I would rather not have to face the Wings. Let Nashville play a grueling seven game series with them, beat them, and then fall to the killer team that is the Sharks. Or face them and truly man up to the challenge of playing (and hopefully beating) the best team in the league.
BTW, what do you think of the rumors that SJ is interested in Pronger?

  2. I don’t think the Sharks can absorb Pronger’s contract - but if we did make room the player most likely to go would probably be Cheechoo because he’s making $3M working on the 3rd line. And which of our defensemen would we want to see go to free up that roster spot?
