San Jose Sharks - Be Careful What You Wish For

San Jose SharksYesterday I wrote that despite the standings and the push to the playoffs, all I wanted to see at the game last night was a “…Sharks win during one of those epic games.” Well…although they didn’t win the game WAS rather epic!

First let me make one thing clear, I don’t really care about winning or losing in a shoot out. I do care about the points but I’m more interested in how the team plays during the actual game than their performance in the skills competition. Last night was one of the best regular season games I’ve seen (in person) since the San Jose Sharks played the Detroit Red Wings in January of 2009.

My seats were smack dab in the middle of the Vancouver Canucks section, about 1/5 of our section were Vancouver fans. But the banter back and forth was actually fun and entertaining. And I hate to say this (rockandrollnobody), but Red Wing fans are SO obnoxious and seem to start more trouble than any other visiting fan, whereas the Canucks fans seemed to just want to have fun with the whole situation. You can imagine what the last three minutes of regulation were like - given the 3 back-and-forth goals scored within that time period.

And when watching the replay of Torrey Mitchell’s game-tying goal, the one where he skated through 4 Canucks on his way to the goalie, I was reminded of unrulytravllr’s love for Mr. Mitchell, and how eerily skillful that shot was to this one:

And finally, to everyone who turned me down when I called to see if they wanted to go to the game with me - Son of OT, Tbuddha, Eman - was the game just as awesomely epic on TV as it was to be there? I think NOT!

  1. What, I leave for a few weeks and no mention of Dan Heatly’s suspension? Wallin gets face planted into the boards and no suspension. Murray’s hits not reviewed (and they should not have been).
I was out of town and then my laptop had to be replaced and I’m slowly adding back my websites I had on my old laptop to my new one. I’ve now added back penaltykill.net.
I’m back baby and getting ready for the play-offs. Can you believe how tight the Pacific is? Even when we are winning we can’t seem to gain any ground. It’s going to come down to the last few games. Also at some point we are going to have to rest a few players, but it is hard to do with so many teams bunched up. Niemi in goal tonight, but I think we should start Nemo on Saturday (which I’m going to).
Have no idea when Huskins and Nichol come back. McCarthy got called up for the Heatly suspension. I guess McGinn and Ferrio have played their way out of the line-up.

  3. I wrote some random thoughts on the Sharks and the Heatley suspension. Or rather, what I see as Heatley’s poor poor poor decision making.
And Couture got hurt last night. I hope is isn’t out too long.

  4. Well said Unrulytravller. Heatly drives me nuts also. Couture was not part of the morning skate today and is listed as being day to day. He did tweet that it was worse than it looked and that he is feeling better. Back on the ice was Nichol and Huskins.
It will be interesting to see what the league does about Matt Cooke today.
