San Jose Sharks - Be On The Lookout

San Jose Sharks(San Jose, CA) March 5, 2009 9:59pm. This is an ABP (all-points bulletin) for the front line of the San Jose Sharks. Missing are Joe Thornton, Devin Setoguchi and Patrick Marleau. These three, who were extremely prominent in establishing the Shark’s offensive dominance since the start of the 2008-2009 season, have recently dropped off the radar.

Joe has 3 points in 5 games, but seems to be distracted game time, committing un-Joe like penalties and turnovers. Patty has been seen streaking up and down the ice, has 2 points in 5 games but his shots look anemic. Setoguchi has one goal and one assist in 5 games, however his usual accuracy has disappeared.

What happened? Where’s the fire, the unbridled joy and hunger to be the best? Once, the whole team was scoring, even the 4th line chipped in. Opponents did not know who to cover or where the next offensive attack would come from. Now, the 2nd line has been carrying the team focused the full 60 minutes - while the first line fades. The “big three” seem to not be on the same page. Over the last 5 games, they give us a peek of their awesome skills as though to tease us, but then they turtle-up and go back to being mere mortals.

To be fair, there are some defensive issues and injuries that are contributing to this crappy streak the Sharks are experiencing. However….Team Teal….WTF? The first time in THIRTEEN YEARS a 3-goal lead is blown. Do you really think you can take your foot off the gas just because you have a 3-goal lead? Tonight is just a small sample of a team “attitude” problem that has existed for several seasons.

Hopefully this is just a mini- not a major-meltdown. Phrases like “rough patches” do nothing to quell the rumblings and concern of the Shark faithful. Is it that we, the fans, are now spoiled and are getting frustrated because the Sharks look like an average team? Are we now expecting perfection each game? YOU BET! This is OUR year and no one else’s. If the Sharks fail this year, it will feel like the disastrous New England Patriot’s loss of the Super Bowl after going undefeated the entire regular season.

Faithful Shark fans, check under their beds for the pods because someone has stolen the real Jumbo, Patty and Seto! While JR may be the heart and soul of the team, when the big three take the lead, the rest of the team follows.

When last seen, these three forwards were lighting the lamp from all angles and with their teammates, dominating the entire NHL. Hopefully when found, they’ll be armed and dangerous with the Sharks in the first seed for the Stanley Cup run.

  1. Watching the game last night I was saying “I *hope* these guys are trying out different things”, meaning I hope part of the poor play is because they’re trying to fine tune weaker points in the Sharks’ overall game. Games of late have become very predictable - a lot of dump-and-chase, and the power play is all ‘pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-shoot from the point’. However, remember last March - the 20+ game win streak that ran out of gas in the second round?
