San Jose Sharks - Captaincy Is Up For Grabs

San Jose SharksThe San Jose Sharks have announced that the team captain and all alternate captain designations will be up for grabs and decided in training camp. The interesting collateral storyline there is that Joe Thornton is out as alternate. That’s not to say that Marleau won’t earn the ‘C’ and Thornton the ‘A’ in camp, but it does seem like an interesting way to stir up some competition during camp if such things are important enough to the players.

  1. Does Marleau get moved? Was this done so he would waive his no-trade clause? Who will be the next captain and alternates?

    Many questions to be answered.

With the Sharks’ captaincy up for grabs, a trade wouldn’t surprise anybody. Marleau’s name has emerged regularly in trade rumors for the last couple seasons. If he does stay, you figure this could play out a couple of ways. One, he would excel without the mental burden and responsibilities of the captaincy or he could crap all over himself because the team and management have lost confidence in him. I will say this, the last time his leadership was questioned he followed up with one of his best seasons.

  3. Man…. I honestly don’t know what they’re looking for as a Captain.

Marleau has been beaten and battered during his time as Captain with trade rumors and people questioning his actual Captaincy capabilities, but how much more does he really have to prove to a team that doesn’t help put up in times of need?

I personally talked to Marleau and told him that I believed he preformed as I wanted him to in the playoffs. He scored 2 GWG’s in the playoffs…. as far as I’m concerned, that’s EXACTLY what I want my Captain doing on my team.

I will say this….. After a year of being questioned and getting rid of Ron Wilson, who openly criticized Marleau, Marleau is the leader in GWG (10), SHG (5), Tied for lead in +/- (+16), Tied for lead in PPG (11). He’s second in Shots with 15 less then the leader, and second in points by 15 again. All of this, with only playing 76 of 82 games.

Marleau a leader? Only on paper…. and apparently that doesn’t count……

  4. I agree - I would HATE to see Marleau go, I think he’s great and should stay a Shark. I appreciate the numbers he puts up. However…after Roenick retired he did say on Comcast Sports Net that the problem with the team is that there’s no one in the locker room to get into a guy’s face and challenge him, that everyone is too comfortable. I don’t know if that’s the exact role of a hockey captain but if, at the end of the day, we get there then fine - just make whatever changes need to be made.
