San Jose Sharks Marleau-Heatley Trade - It’s Not A Rumor?

San Jose SharksFC Sharks Fan has contacted us to let us know “ESPN is reporting Patrick Marleau has been traded to the Kings, but all parties involved say it’s not true. Other sites have said the deal is done and got leaked early because Patrick is working out an extension with LA. Traded in the same Division? Stay tuned boys.”

He also reports that Heatley’s $7.5M salary would count against the Sharks cap this year. If this trade goes through, Doug Wilson will have tied up $14.5M of a $50+M salary cap between Dan Boyle and Heatley for the next 3 years. Throw in Joe Thornton and $22M, or approximately 44%, of our cap will be tied up in 3 guys for the next 2 season. Quite a commitment.

The rumored deal sends the Los Angeles Kings’ Alexander Frolov and Jarret Stoll to the Senators.

Torturedkingsfan hates the deal, he thinks Frolov and Stoll are a better value to the team than just one player, even if that player is Patrick Marleau.

Stay tuned….

  1. Interesting side note. I’ve read from other sites that season ticket holders have received their tickets for 2009-2010 and a few players are absent from being printed on them and not included in promotional material. Notably Marleau, Nabby and Cheechoo. Coincidence? Hmm….

  2. I also noticed that the Sharks’ redesigned website only has Thornton and Boyle on it, and they no longer rotate images of other players….

  3. This just in from the Merc:

Patrick Marleau said today that — trade rumors notwithstanding — he’ll be out on the rink at Sharks Ice when training camp opens this weekend.

Marleau said he wasn’t worried about the trade rumors. He knew he hadn’t been asked to waive his no-trade clause and that would have to happen first.
“This last one, I got a lot of phone calls but I was just going about my business,” he said after this morning’s Captain’s Ice session. “I can’t worry about that other stuff. …. I know I’m going to know before it’s in the media.”

    This from ESPN’s John Buccigross:
Buccigross was a guest on Gabriel Morency’s “Sports Rage” Sirius Satellite Radio show late last night, and revealed the process that led to ESPN breaking the Heatley story.
“Right now, obviously, nothing is officially done or it would have been announced by all parties. What I heard earlier tonight was that it was a three-team trade. First I had heard it was going to be tonight or tomorrow. Obviously they want to move him before training camp. So I sniffed around and my best source, who’s been perfect for me, mentioned he got an email from a front office personnel member. He forwarded me the email, and it’s a pretty significant name (laughs) in the NHL, and I thought ‘Boy, I would have gone on it just with my initial source, because he’s been great for me.’ Then he showed me this email, and it was completely supporting it.
“So I was surprised when it hasn’t come through tonight. Now, things are complicated, there could be other parts to it, but I still believe he will be moved. But it appears, as I was told, is not going to happen tonight anyway.”
Somebody is lying somewhere. I’m glad the trade is not going through. I can’t see DW trading Marleau within the division. I also wrote earlier that I was fine with Heatley as a Sharks as long as we do not lose Marleau.
