San Jose Sharks Might Be The Best Team In Hockey

San Jose SharksPhil Esposito was pontificating on NHL Home Ice the other day. The topic was the Presidents’ Trophy and what value it has beyond home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

To paraphrase, he said which ever team wins the Presidents’ Trophy is the best team in hockey for that season. The team that leads the league after an entire 82 game season, a season possibly plagued by injuries, slumps, strife, trades and any other common sports maladies, is that season’s best team. Unfortunately, the best team in hockey doesn’t always win the Stanley Cup, because to win the Stanley Cup you have to be the best team in a 7 game season.

I started this blog at the beginning of the season because I wanted to actively ‘participate’ in the Sharks season. My participation was sparked by my displeasure over what I perceived as our local sports writer’s lack of appreciation for the journey of a full hockey season.

Over the course of this season, with all the success the Sharks have had, I lost track of the point. I completely forgot why I’ve been writing all these months and shifted my focus on the ends instead of the means. If the San Jose Sharks are able to raise a Presidents’ Trophy banner in their building, fans would immediately remember and know that during the 2008-2009 NHL season the Sharks were the best team in hockey. That banner would represent the process - the “journey” - that we’ve all enjoyed so far. Over the course of the season I’ve been lucky enough to go to almost a dozen games and they’ve never lost when I was in the building. I’ve enjoyed games with family & friends and even introduced one more person to the ‘live’ hockey experience.

So with 6 games left to go Sharks fans, it’s been a heck of a season so far. The Sharks’ magic number is ‘9’, that’s the number of points they either have to win or the Detroit Red Wings have to ‘not win’ in order for the Sharks to clinch the Presidents’ Trophy – the first in our team’s history.

Now, let’s hope the Sharks can win those short seasons Phil was talking about…

  1. sharksfan,

The NHL hockey season really is a journey. Each year, the season starts out with renewed hope for every team. Fans get to see how the team evolves through out the year and of course we all anticipate the trade deadline and what our teams decide to do. I understand your excitement when it comes to the President’s Trophy, but in a sense I am not sure how much fan’s will remember the season unless a Stanley Cup Championship banner is in the rafters. It has been a great season and now we get to look forward to the post season.

    Go Penguins!

  2. There are times when I look at the rafters in the Shark Tank and see the Pacific Division Banners and all I’m reminded of is the early exists from the playoffs. I’m starting a banner that I’m going to post in my living room. Bold letters will say, “IT TAKES 16 GAMES TO BRING THE CUP HOME”.

For every post season win, I’ll put a check next to the box. I hope at the end I have all the boxes checked. There will be games that we should win, that we will lose. I just hope we have enough good games to overcome the bad games. The playoffs are the second season. The first 82 games are about positioning. We have the players and team chemistry to get it done.

    This is our year.

    GO SHARKS!

  3. I actually did my math wrong, the Sharks’ magic number is 10 - I didn’t realize the Bruins have passed up the Red Wings for 2nd in the NHL.

FC Sharks Fan - can you take a picture of your banner and send it to me, I’d really like to see what it looks like hanging in your living room!

  4. You got it! I’ll also send to Comcast and hope they do the “Fear the Beard” again this year. I sent in a picture a few years ago during the play-offs and they showed it between periods. It was of me and my sons. We got a huge kick out of it. I had friends and relatives call me saying they saw the picture.

I’ll start my beard again after the last game. I hope to have a full Grizzly Adams beard come Mid June.

    Can you feel the excitement?

    GO SHARKS!
