San Jose Sharks Should Extend Patrick Marleau’s Contract Now

San Jose SharksHey Sharks fans, do you remember last season? I know, you remember being bounced by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round. But do you remember what happened before that? What I remember is that we were very excited about our prospects for going deep in the playoffs. We welcomed Todd McClellan and his fancy pants, run-and-shoot offense. We cheered Dan Boyle as he constantly cheated from the point to knock in a Joe Thornton pass. And I remember a “rejuvenated” Patrick Marleau playing lights-out hockey, amassing a 70+ point season and being one of the few Sharks to create his own opportunities.

Then came the playoff thing. That’s all I’ll say about that.

Over the summer the discussion turned to Marleau and whether or not he had what it takes to lead the Sharks. His whole status as a Shark was based not on his ablity as a hockey player but on his ability to lead. All those trade rumors were based on the idea that you couldn’t keep a guy on the team if you demoted him from team captain. Apparently you can. So far this season it appears that once again, Patrick Marleau is the best Shark on the ice. More impressive is that his performance is still stallar GIVEN all the antics of this past summer.

Let’s imagine that Marleau was never the captain of the Sharks. Given his performance last season the conversation this past summer could have been vastly different. Instead of trade talks, there would probably have been talks of extending Marleau’s contract, ensuring that Marleau ends his career as a Shark. In fact, the conversation may have been that Marleau SHOULD be the captain instead of the other way around. Considering how he’s playing now, despite it all, tells me a lot about his character and ability. I would like to officially start the conversation now that Doug Wilson should start working something out with Marleau’s agent before the end of the season.

Putting my money where my mouth is - we have 6 out of the possible 10 points on this road trip - my over/under was 6 - so the Philadelphia game is just for extra credit.

  2. Yah know Sharks Fan, I was thinking the same thing. Something tells me they wait until after the season, before free agency. Let’s see how well Marleau does in the post season, without the “C”. We have several free agents next year like Pavs, Seto, and Manny. I don’t think Blake comes back. If we sign Patty, we may not be able to sign Nabby.

Obviously Patty does not want to leave and maybe he will give us a hometown discount. Funny what a few months a difference makes. Before the beginning of the season fans were calling for his head. Now we worry if we will be able to sign him.

  3. Marleau needs to stay. He has been the most consistent scorer and he stays HEALTHY! Sure he will miss a game or three during the season, but most of the time he is there with the team. I am glad we have him and that he is doing well in the early season. It could be that he is pressing harder to show the fans/organization that he is for real and he cares about the success of the team.
Unfortunately, it is all about the playoffs, and if Patty does not get some help–I’m looking at you Thornton, Clowe, Seto, Heatley, Nabby–the team will not succeed, and somehow, despite the fact that he no longer wears the “C” he will still get the blame because SJ can’t recognize that Marleau is THE BEST thing to ever happen to the franchise.
