San Jose Sharks Slump At The Right Or Wrong Time? |
Back around December 15th of 2009 the San Jose Sharks had just lost their 5th straight hockey game. I did a little research on the subject and discovered that the Sharks don’t lose 5 games in a row very often. Here we are on March 20, 2010 and the Sharks have lost another 5 games in a row. I’m pretty obsessive and compulsive, but folks I’m not going back trying to find the last time the Sharks lost 5 games in a row twice in the same season. What I can say is I don’t remember a season with 2 5-game losing streaks when I was doing my research, so it’s quite possible it’s been more than 7 years since this has happened.
My article on the subject included what happened to the Sharks after dropping 5 straight. What happened to the Sharks since December 15th of this season? The Sharks managed to win 8 in a row going 24-8* up until their last win 6 games ago. The Sharks won 3 out of every 4 games over the next 32 games following their losing streak.
Here’s the thing.
There are 11 games left in the regular season. In the playoffs it takes 16 games to win the Stanley Cup. If you do the math, if the Sharks were to repeat their performance over the next 32 games, meaning win 3 out of every 4 games, the Sharks would end up with 15.75 wins within the structure of the Stanley Cup playoffs. That puts the Sharks just under the magic number of 16 to win The Cup. If you consider that games 33-37 (following the losing streak) were all losses, the Sharks could end up just one win shy of winning it all…
*Since we’re doing a comparison for playoff potential I just counted wins and losses with no differentiation for overtime losses.
It’s definitely the wrong time for the Sharks to be slumping. Especially because Phoenix is only one point behind them for the division. They definitely need to turn things around right now.
@Eric - looks like they might not turn things around in time, there’s not a lot of time left after tonight’s loss to Edmonton.
Phoenix are the hottest team in the NHL right now with 9 straight wins. Who would have thought that?
It is only one point, and the Coyotes have played one more game, so the Sharks do have a chance. I know a few people who said that the Coyotes wouldn’t even make the playoffs this year. The fact that they’re in the division lead is one of the biggest surprises of the season.
