The Penguins Playoffs Start Now

The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to have to play playoff hockey for the next few months just to get to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Before last night, they were ranked 10th in the Eastern Conference and looking in from the outside of the 8 playoff spots. All the players and the coaches know that they are going to have to play extremely well to make the playoffs this year.

Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Probably. Is it going to be easy? Of course not. All of the players are going to have to step up on this team. Injuries have plagued the Pens so far this season and hopefully it will start to let up here soon. Last night, against the Rangers, the Penguins got Max Talbot and Pascal Dupuis back from injuries and hopefully will be getting Sergi Gonchar back in a month.

Miroslav Satan will definitely need to awake from his silence and so will Ruslan Fedotenko when he returns from his injury. This team is going to have to be firing on all cylinders. Last season, went on a 43 point run to end the season after the All-Star break. This year, they are going to have to do at least that to make the playoffs.

With all that said, I look forward to some great games as the Penguins look to finish off the season strong.

  1. If they manage a similar run of 43 points, that’ll give them 95 on the season which is almost certainly good enough to squeak into the playoffs. But earning 43 points of the remaining 33 games, means winning just over 65% of their games/points. With two games in hand, Florida has a slightly better chance of earning the 43 that would keep Pittsburgh out of the playoffs.

Have to say though, Pittsburgh’s April schedule looks much easier on paper than Florida’s.

April 7th could be interesting if Florida and Pittsburgh are still chasing that 8th spot.

Looks to be a good race.

  2. Very good points. I also believe that Pittsburgh has played more games which means it is going to be even more difficult to do. I look forward to at least a couple more months of hockey.
