“Tweener” News From The San Jose Sharks

sharksfanIt’s pretty quiet in Sharksville, waiting for the finals to end so the Sharks can start talking about possible moves (or at the very least, allow the rumors to start flying). Also on tap is the draft, which is where the well is going to start running dry for the San Jose Sharks as they’ve traded away a lot of picks to build the current team. The Sharks have no first round picks this year and only have two second round picks (43rd and 57th overall) in the first four rounds (next pick is #146 in the 5th).

Otherwise, FC Sharks Fan found this nugget:

The San Jose Sharks will defiantly look different on the ice and may also look different behind the bench. San Jose has given Minnesota permission to talk to assistant coach Todd Richards regarding its coaching vacancy.

Minnesota GM Chuck Fletcher and Richards relationship goes back to Pittsburg where Fletcher was the assistant GM and Richards was the head coach in Wilkes-Barre, the Penguins’ AHL development team. Richards is a Minnesota native and was a defenseman for four seasons at the University of Minnesota.

Before Dan Bylsma’s amazing job he has done with Pittsburg, rumor has it that Richards was considered to replace fired Michel Therrien this season but couldn’t get him out of San Jose in the middle of the season.

Possible replacement for Richards. Can you say Mike Ricci? Let the rumor mill fly.

  1. Speaking of the draft and rumors, several media outlets have Patty being moved on or before the draft, JT not being moved and Dan Boyle designated the new captain. Time will tell. The draft is scheduled to be June 26th and 27th.

  2. I wonder how much ‘business’ is involved in all this. Marleau is in the last year of his contract so trading him means you could get something for him now before he becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent after next season. Joe Thronton has 2 years left but Boyle as around 5, so make someone you know is going to be here a while your Captain - besides the fact that Boyle really steps it up in the playoffs. By the way, the other Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of next season - Nabokov.

  3. Me thinks you are on to something. Also have you noticed how players mysteriously have break-through or career seasons when their contracts are about to expire? Hmmm…

As far as goaltending, who else is out there that you would want? Nabby has to play better and we should not have let him decide his workload. It’s kind of like letting the inmates control the prison. He should not have played so many games, especially down the stretch. Last month Steve Simmons noted in the Toronto Sun that the Sharks were interested in Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson. According to Simmons Gustavsson has narrowed down his list to Toronto, San Jose, Colorado and Dallas, but only Colorado had promised him a role as a starting goaltender.

A day later, his agent Joe Resnick told ESPN’s Scott Burnside that no team had offered him a role as a starter and that as many as 20 NHL teams expressed interest in his services. Burnside says that Toronto GM Brian Burke draws comparisons of Gustavsson to Henrik Lundqvist.

Would a Nabokov-Gustavsson tandem be better than a Nabokov-Boucher or Nabokov-Greiss tandem? One more offseason question to add to the queue.

  4. I enjoy reading these updates on the Sharks. Thanks for the update. It looks like this will be an interesting offseason for them. Even though it the offseason sucks, it’s always interesting/exciting to see what moves are made.
