Vancouver Canucks Off Season Report

Hello fellow Canucks fans, firstly I would like to introduce myself. My name is James and I am from England in the UK. I am huge Canuck fan and have been a hockey fan since my early teens. I have recently become the Canucks blogger for this great site. I am really looking forward blogging for the new season. So lets get ready for what will be a long journey with highs and lows but we will all still be pledging allegiance whatever the out come!

I would like to discuss our off-season dealings, not every one, just the most significant moves. I shall put them in categories as follows.

The Good:
Resign Daniel and Henrick Sedin over 5 years for $30.5 Million with an average salary of $5.33 million. The Sedins are the Canucks biggest threat on offence, both having an excellent season last year. Daniel had 31 goals 51 assist. Henrick 22 goals and 60 assists they both scored 82 points.

Sign Mikael Samuelson 3 years $7.5 average salary of $2.5. I think this is a great addition to the team because he can score big goals, is good on the PP and can play on the back end if needed.

Resign Shane O’Brian 1 year $1.6 million. I have to say O’Brian is one of my favorite Dmen. He is tough, checks well, can intimidate opposing players and on the odd occasion he can score. Although he needs to stay out of the penalty box!

Resign Kyle Wellwood 1 year for $1.5 million. He did have at times, a rather inconsistent year, but nonetheless he proved that he can score big goals and to most peoples surprise can be good checker.

Sign Mathieu Schnieder 1 year $1.55 million. This is great because he brings a veteran presence to the team can QB the PP and has won a Stanley Cup ring.

Acquired Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from the Sharks (note to the editor - never mind) we only lost two prospects that had yet to prove themselves. This will give a good puck moving Dman and also give more experience.

Resign Roberto Luongo for a staggering 12 years at $64 million but with an average salary of $5.33. As far as I am concerned Luongo is our best player and with the right players around, can help us go deeper into the playoffs. I do thing that he should play fewer games next season.

The Bad:
Loosing Mattias Ohlund to Tampa Bay. He in my opinion is one of the best Dmen to play for this team and I shall miss him, I would like to see the organization retire his jersey.

I think that this has been a very good off-season for the Canucks and the positives far out way the negatives. Mike Gillis has to done wonderful job in changing the complexion of this team. He has added depth, experience and in some areas talent. While this looks great on paper only time will tell. One thing I know for sure is it’s going to be a hell of a season and when you keep wishing the season was here remember that the off season starts this Monday!

The summer is almost over, so come on folks at the top of our voices let shout “GO NUCKS GO!”
