Vicariously Rooting For The San Jose Sharks |
Converting is always a gradual process. For example after using Windows for almost two decades I’ve made the switch to Mac. The switch was gradual - it started with an iPod, then the iPhone (3 generations), then a MacBook Pro. This past weekend I finally moved all my data off my Windows PC and loaded it onto my Mac. I bought my first iPod about 4 years ago so the process has taken a while.
Converting to hockey has followed a similar path. First it was just watching San Jose Sharks games on TV. Then I started going to games. Next came the swag - specifically you know you’ve crossed the line when you get your own customized jersey. I always get my name on the back, I’ve never understood why you’d get an actual player’s name when they move around so much. A few years ago I actually watched playoff games AFTER the Sharks had been eliminated. This year I actually found myself watching games that didn’t involve the Sharks (except, of course, for the Winter Classic). Today is another milestone - I’m actually INTERESTED in a game that doesn’t involve the Sharks, and that is tonight’s game between the Vancouver Canucks and Phoenix Coyotes. I’ll actually rooting for the Canucks (sorry PuckGal). I think I’ll have to grab the last few months of Gamecenter Live to see it.
When did you know things had changed forever?
When it comes to purchasing a jersey, I agree that it is a risky business as players can move at any given time. However, I still have to purchase player jerseys. Although, the process involves making sure that the player you choose has a strong potential of sticking around for more than 4 years.
Personally, I prefer jerseys of players that are less known, but that makes the process even more difficult. For example, I was going to buy a jersey 2 years ago and waited until after the off season to determine who. Originally, I wanted Ryan Malone, but then he ended up heading to Tampa. I ended up going against my own word and bought a Sidney Crosby jersey as I knew he would not be going anywhere anytime soon.
With the Kris Letang signing today, I do wish I would have gotten his or Brooks Orpik’s jersey. Fun times!
I actually like 3rd / 4th line guys, I would have bought Mike Grier in the past, or Scott Nichol this year - but those are exactly the guys that get traded all the time. I’ll just be me - I don’t think I’ll trade myself anytime soon!
